Jennifer Cheesman, a long-time member of the Grace United Church choir, stepped into the role of Interim Music Director in August 2020. She has enjoyed choral singing for most of her life, beginning as a member of the Collier Street United Church Junior Choir under the direction of Thelma Cockburn. As a young adult, Jennifer sang with the University of Western Ontario Choir in London, Ontario and, since 2004, has been a member of Lyrica Chamber Choir of Barrie.
During her elementary school years, Jennifer studied piano and completed Royal Conservatory Exams for performance and theory up to a Grade 5 piano level. In High School, she was a member of the Barrie North Collegiate Concert Band as a French Horn player and earned a Grade 8 performance certificate through the Royal Conservatory of Music.
Jennifer’s music leadership experience includes a four-month period in 2014-15 as Interim Director of Chaverim, a Christian youth band who shared their music ministry with churches throughout Simcoe County. In the winter of 2016, Jennifer lead the Grace United Church choir as Interim Music Director following the retirement of Grace’s long-time Music Director, Peter Maule. As a Junior Church leader at Grace, Jennifer directed a Children’s Advent Choir for most of the years between 1996 and 2016.
Besides musical endeavours, Jennifer has enjoyed a 25-year career as a paediatric occupational therapist in Simcoe County. She also enjoys camping and canoeing, rowing on Lake Simcoe, curling, Nordic skiing and reading.
